What’s getting in the way of you communicating well?
We are both Clinical Psychologists who have a passion for helping people have more satisfying relationships. This starts with building awareness and owning our part in the communication breakdown within the relationship.
As we talk through this information, please be reminded that while we are psychologists, we are not functioning in the role of therapists during this meeting. We are functioning as teachers. This workshop does not initiate a therapeutic relationship.
Part One: How we learn how healthy communication and how to have health relationships
Entering adulthood does not automatically mean that we should know how to communicate in healthy ways. As you watch our workshop take some time either before, during, or after to fill out this self-reflection worksheet, which offers prompting questions to help you understand how your communication style and/or unhealthy or healthy way of being in relationships came to be.
Part Two: Six Common Barriers to Communicating Well and How to Overcome them
While there are likely more than six things that get in the way of good communication, Dr. Boddy and I have focused on on the one’s that we see most frequently in our clinical practice as therapists. The six barriers in include cultural considerations, getting too heated to think straight, not actually knowing what we want or need before we start a conversation, straying off topic, including too much in the conversation, and not having the skills to have the conversation more effectively. To help you address what to do when you are. getting too heated we have included thisgrounding and coping handout and a feelings list, as it’s hard to get a handle on your feelings when you don’t know what they are. This handout will help you to stay on topic because throwing in everything is not helpful (even though it is enticing). Last, these scripts will help you find healthy language to express yourself when you are having a hard time.
