Do you ever feel like you don’t know what you are doing? Do you ever wish there was a guidebook for parenting?
If so, welcome to Parenting 101. This is part one of a three part series.
This workshop is all about creating a strong foundation with our children. It’s about forming a deep connection that will weather any storm. This foundation needs to be cultivated and nurtured from infancy through the teen years and into adulthood with our children. This even helps kids learn how to feel secure and safe in other adult relationships. It will even help them create warm and nurturing relationship with healthy boundaries should they decide to have children.
Parenting can be so rewarding and fun. It can also be challenging and exhausting.
Do you feel like you are giving this parenting gig your all, but feel like you are somehow falling short?
Do you feel like you are messing up or failing as a mother/parent?
Do you get easily frustrated with your kid(s) and yourself? You feel guilty for feeling this way and walk away feeling like a “bad mom/parent?”
Chances are, you are a perfectly imperfect parent, just like the rest of us. The good news is, you’re here, so you are interested in finding the best way to parent your child(ren). We are psychologists and we are also both mothers so we really get it because we are on the front lines, too.
We know what it is like to worry about being a good parent.
We know what it is like to unintentionally replicate old patterns that our parents taught us, even though deep down we want to do it differently.
We know what it is like to not really be sure about what we’re doing, but pretend to have it all together to avoid judgment and criticism.
We know what it is like to try multiple ways to solve a problem, and still, nothing seems to work.
We know what it is like to read all the parenting books and study the research, but have to change course because it isn’t working for our kid.
We also know what it is like to have knowledge, and still feel confused by what is the best method/approach for us, our kids, and our family.
We know what it is like to feel excited and scared about our parenting journey.
Here is the thing, many approaches and techniques ascribe to a one size fits all to parenting. If your kid hits, then put your kid in (1) time-out, (2) redirect them, (3) take away their toys, (4) make them apologize, or (5) don’t make them apologize. It is so confusing. There is so much information out there, but what and how do you decide what is best for you and your child?
As psychologists, we know authoritative parents have warm and nurturing relationships with their children. Children understand their parents guidelines and expectations. Parents also have boundaries and explain their reasons for discipline, which is used to teach and correct instead of punish. This parenting method takes a lot of time, patience, and commitment; however, research consistently shows that it leads to the healthiest outcomes for kids. These kids are often more independent, tend to manage negative emotions better, have more positive social relationships, have higher self-esteem, and great academic performance.
All this research, is to simply say that we know personally and professionally how hard parenting is and that creating these foundational skills sets the stage for success. We live and breathe this knowledge professionally and personally. We are on this journey with you to create the change you want to see within yourself and your child.
